Historical Significance

King Jajati Keshari built the Lingaraja Temple during the 11th century. It is one of the city’s oldest temples and is considered one of the most important architectural achievements of the Kalinga Empire. The temple is a perfect blend of Kalinga and Dravidian styles of architecture and is an important site for studying ancient Indian architecture.

The temple is also considered one of the most important shrines of Lord Shiva in India. According to legends, the temple honors Lord Shiva, who appeared as a Lingam (a symbol of Lord Shiva) to King Jajati Keshari in a dream. The king was so impressed by Lord Shiva’s appearance that he built a temple to honor him.

The Lingaraja Temple is a magnificent structure with an impressive height of 55 meters. The temple is built on a raised platform and surrounded by a high wall with intricate carvings.
