Mahe served as an important trading post for the French East India Company and later became a prosperous port town. Its economy declined after the British annexation of Pondichéry in 1816. Still, it regained some importance during World War II when it served as a base for Free French forces fighting against the Japanese in Burma.

Today, mahe is a quiet backwater with a few remaining colonial-era buildings and not much to see or do. However, its location on India’s Malabar Coast makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby beaches and towns such as Thalassery and Kannur.
