Introduction to Personal Growth and Development
You can call this realization by many names, be it personal development or be it personal growth and development or be it finding yourself, there are different names, but the underlying thing is that you need to realize yourself. You need to realize your full potential and your hidden talents so that you can not only grow personally but also take on the tasks that you had thought were out of your reach before. You will be able to push the boundaries for yourself and work towards a better self.
The means of the process don’t really matter. You might do something that you have always done but do it in a different way or do something new altogether. The point here is to put yourself into situations that will help you in exploring yourself, the situations in which you will be able to push yourself to the edge and discover the various new things about yourself.
Steps for Personal Growth and Development
Here are some of the points that will help you get started on the journey of personal growth and development.
1. Know yourself
Knowing yourself doesn’t just limit to knowing the likes and dislikes of you but knowing beyond that. The things that get your adrenaline pumping, the things that give you goosebumps, the things you want to try, and the things that you would never in your wildest dreams think of doing. If you really want to excel in the work that you are doing, you need to understand your limits and understand how far you can push yourself. Understand this, and the world will be a better place to live.
Understand this, and you will be able to take on any task that you want to. But to understand this, you need to spend some alone quality time with yourself, putting yourself in situations which you would not put yourself in otherwise. It could vary from person to person of course. You could start by reading a book that you would not have otherwise read, or you could take a trip to the place you have always wanted to take, or you could just go on a trip with your pen and a notebook and write to your heart’s content. Anything and everything will do; you just need to push yourself to the limit and do something that will help you in the journey of personal growth and development and to find new talent in yourself.
2. Surround yourself with beautiful people
You should definitely surround yourself with people who are different from you in terms of experiences that they have had, the things they have seen, and the people they have met. Learn from their experiences; share your stories with them. There are so many things that you can learn from them, and you can teach them. Surround yourself with the people who have qualities different from you, who have nature different from you, so that they can teach you the lessons of life that you won’t otherwise be able to learn. This will also help you in the personal growth and development that you aim at. Be around the people who do extraordinary things; it will give you a new enthusiasm to test yourself as to how far can you go.
3. Get rid of the people who bring you down
Getting rid of the people who are not good for you seems so easy to do. But trust me, it is not a cakewalk. Sometimes the people who bring you down are the people who you have known all your life, and you can’t bring yourself to make the decision of detaching yourself from them or some other times they could be the people who also happen to be your employer, in that case, it is impossible to get rid of them without putting your career at stake. But sometimes, that is exactly the thing you should be doing.
And you have to make the decision because you never know what harm those people are doing to your mental and physical health. You can do it either by confronting the person and the situation or by just ignoring it, or by leaving the situation altogether with the motive of never looking back. Even if you need some outside help, then don’t shy away in asking it; you are doing all this for your own benefit and not for anyone else. The means of getting rid of the people is not as important as is the end result, i.e., to relieve yourself of the unnecessary demotivation and unnecessary negativity that those people bring along with them in your life. Plus, this will help you in discovering yourself and discovering the confidence in you that might have been long forgotten.
4. Three good things to practice for personal growth and development
We often neglect the good things that happen to us during the day and concentrate only on the bad things that happen. And hence bring our energies down and rip ourselves of the will to do anything new and exciting. Because at the back of our mind, we keep thinking of the negative thoughts.
But it is high time that you start appreciating the little good things that happen to you during the day. Start with writing three good things that happened to you during the day and three things that you are thankful for. These could be as little as a problem that you solved during the day or a work well done, there is no stopping. Soon you will start to realize that the list is much longer than just three things, and this will help in bring your spirits up and help you try new things with your life.
5. Avoid comparing yourself to what you see on social media
Stop comparing yourself with everything that you see on social media. First of all, not everything that you see on social media is true. It is highly filtered and scrutinized before putting it up on social media. The people putting up the posts are trying to put their best foot forward. And you are comparing the best of them with the worst of you; this can never end well.
Second of all, it is not the real you that you are comparing yourself against. It is like you are comparing an orange with an apple and beating yourself up because that orange is not an apple. Stop doing that. It is the worst thing that you could do to yourself. So the right thing to do here would be to unsubscribe their post on Facebook. This would have dual benefits; one, you would not have to unfriend them on the website and second, you can free yourself from their posts and you can free yourself from the unnecessary comparison that you do all the time. This can do wonders for you if you stick with this plan.
6. Write
People are often observed saying that what they can’t express in speech, they write. So why don’t you apply this rule to your life for personal growth and development? Write whatever you want to write. You want to write a fictional story, so you should write the story; you want to write about your day in the journal, then that is exactly what you should do. Just put your thoughts on the paper and make room for some other thoughts in your mind. You will find it extremely therapeutic. You don’t have to be a writer to write what you feel; you just have to know what you feel. It can be a simple note on your phone or a whole full-fledged blog on the internet. Just make space for some new happy thoughts to enter your mind, and after some time, you will definitely start to realize the change and personal growth plan.
7. De-clutter
We all had gathered some things in our lives with which we had associated an emotional feeling and refused to part with it no matter how sad it made us when we looked at it, or it was just simply useless to us now. Get rid of those useless and unwanted things and feelings from your life. In short, de-clutter your life. You just can’t carry your past into your future. It is of no good. Get rid of those useless thoughts and let your mind grow. Stop holding yourself back.
8. Get in touch with nature
Nature can be one of the best getaways for you when you don’t feel the best of yourself. Go for a long walk on the beach or a beautiful park in your area or just look at the stars at night or the clouds during the day. These little escapes from your real-life into a whole different world, where everything is just plain perfect, where you don’t have a worry in the world; can bring great changes in your life, in your thinking, and in your life as well. It will help you connect with yourself and will help you explore the inner self that you have locked away, that you have kind of lost in this busy world. It will help you grow on an intellectual level and make better decisions about yourself. The world is a beautiful place, start appreciating it a little more.
9. Read
Reading instantly transports you into a whole different world which is quite different from the world that you live in. With the help of reading, you can talk to a person and gain from his experiences, which lived hundreds, thousands of years ago. And you won’t have to do something extraordinary for it. You can do all that is just sitting in the comforts of your home. Reading books can help the personal growth and development process in the most beautiful and easiest way possible. Don’t worry if you think you can’t get through one book. Just pick a book of the genre that might interest you and start reading. Set small goals such as reading 2 pages of the book daily. Start with some light reading, something that is not too much for a beginner. Giving yourself a book to read is the best gift that you can give yourself. And you have no idea of the effect that it will have on you.
10. Get a hobby
You have a hobby, great! Invest your time and energy in it instead of whiling away your time. In case you feel that you don’t have a hobby, then it is even better. In this way, you can try various things that might interest you in order to find a hobby, and you might be able to learn various new skills. In this process, you might meet new people and share your experience with them. Also, a hobby gives you little something to talk about whenever you meet someone, old or new. Find your passion, no matter what it is. Even if it is to collect stamps or old coins. This passion will make you learn so many new things about a personal growth plan and about your passion.
For as long as you live, you should never stop learning how to live. Taking this motto ahead, learn about yourself, experiment with yourself, and get ready for your personal growth and development. You won’t get another chance at life; make this one count.
