What is the Full Form of UNESCO?

We all have heard about UNESCO- The Full form of UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization- a prestigious part of the United Nations. But what is it about?

 

 

UNESCO helps to build peace comprehensively through international cooperation. This zone targets the culture, science, and education of the world, where the agency works extensively to serve the best.

The Organization is an active part of UNSDG or the United Nations Sustainable Development Group- a coalition of the United Nations. This helps to build sustainable development goals or SDGs coherently across the nations.

UNESCO has been working actively in the United Nations, with its headquarters in Paris. It has more than 50 field offices worldwide, including 193 members and 11 associate members.

UNESCO is governed by the General Conference and the executive board- they make decisions based on common grounds and analytics.

Some parts of the world aren’t members of UNESCO or the UN. These include the Cook Islands, Palestine, and Niue. Other UN member states that aren’t part of UNESCO are the United States, Israel, and Liechtenstein.

UNESCO is a big part of the United Nations that has a broader scope and vision. It aims to target sustainability across the world’s educational, scientific, and cultural activities. Let’s explore the objectives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

Objectives of UNESCO

There are a particular set of objectives that UNESCO works on. These are called the selective protocols the organization has to target.

The following are the objectives of UNESCO-

  • Work towards quality education throughout the world. This is done to attain quality education and lifelong learning.
  • To mobilize scientific knowledge and have key policies for sustainable development across the nations.
  • Working towards changing and coping with the social and ethical challenges.
  • Foster cultural diversity and work towards cultural sustainability.
  • Foster intercultural dialogue and peace toward cultural sustainability.
  • Build inclusive knowledge societies. This can be through communication and information across the nations.
  • UNESCO works on global priorities like Gender Equality and Africa-related issues.

Global Priorities

Africa

  1. UNESCO targets 54 African countries- this is for a stronger and better-targeted strategy that helps Africa to be on a global platform.
  2. UNESCO works toward the African Union Agenda 2063 and 2030. It was adopted for sustainable development that paved the ground for the African Economic Community and the African Renaissance.

Gender Equality

  1. UNESCO believes in women and men equality- this serves equal opportunities, choices, power, capabilities, and knowledge among the citizens.
  2. UNESCO aims to equip girls, boys, men, and women with equal knowledge, values, skills, and attitudes. These are done to tackle gender disparities to build a sustainable future for all.
  3. There are many initiatives by UNESCO to work towards the same, including UNESCO Priority Gender Equality Action Plan, Gender Equality Tools, Gender Views, Gender-related UNESCO Chairs and Networks, UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education, and UNESCO Youth Mobile.

Areas of Specialization- Education

  • UNESCO believes that education transforms lives and is one of the most priced things in the organization. It aims to build peace, eradicate poverty and work on sustainable development.
  • UNESCO covers all aspects of education (like no other).
  • UNESCO led the Global Education 2030 Agenda. It is done through Sustainable Development Goal – 4.

  • Science is essential to help us cope with economic, Environmental, and social challenges. UNESCO works on the same.
  • UNESCO helps countries to invent technologies, science, and other innovations. It also helps to develop national science policies that reform their science system.
  • UNESCO works on bioethics to help members make informed decisions.

  • UNESCO helps to safeguard cultural heritage and encourages cultural pluralism. It also helps to strengthen creative industries.
  • UNESCO superhead worldwide advocacy to work on cultural development.
  • UNESCO aims to set clear policies and legal frameworks to engage the international community.
  • Intangible cultural heritage is another UNESCO initiative that includes expressions, knowledge, practices, community skills, and groups that have their cultural heritage. It may be expressed in the form of Oral Traditions, Social Practices, Performing Arts, Rituals, Festive events, Knowledge and Practices concerning nature and the universe, and Traditional Craftsmanship.
