Introduction to DSL Modem
What is DSL Modem, DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line where a telephone line can be used to transfer data from one place to another? A modem converts the data into a format understandable by the receiver so that the data can be translated and received as required by the receiver. It can be perceived that if someone speaks to us in a foreign language or native language which is foreign to us, we will not be able to fetch information. So, the data should be translated into a format that can be understood by us. This is the working principle of the modem.
The device that connects the computer system or router to a telephone line via cable wires to provide digital subscriber line service to the system is called DSL modem connection. The telephone connection is not interrupted and the device works efficiently even if the telephone connection is used. it is easy to say that we get an internet connection via a telephone connection. This is a way of business for telecom companies. The frequency of telephone and DSL connection is different and this is the reason why telephone works even if the internet is being used.
How does DSL Modem work?
It is important to know the working of telephone lines and connections to know about DSL. Telephone connections are made through wires that may be underground or not. These wires have a capacity more than that of normal telephone frequency. Hence, DSL is used in the telephone lines with a different frequency so that an internet connection is also enabled in the same lines. Hence if we consider the period of DSL usage introduction and the telephone introduction, we could say that telephone cables were wasted for nearly a century with the use of less frequency.
A specific modem is needed for DSL connection and it works only for the same. A splitter is used so that the voice and the data connection is separated from the telephone lines. Data is sent through ADSL lines which is specifically used so that the data connection is faster for download than for upload. It is to be noted that similar to other modems, the modem and ISP hub should be kept close so that the connection is faster always. If we stay away from the modem, the speed of the data connection will be worse.
As discussed in the above points, two equipment is needed for the DSL connection. A modem and a splitter make the DSL connection a better one. The modem is supplied either by the company or by the router that works for the DSL connection. It is designed in a way that if we change from one ISP and if we change the connection, it may not work well. Splitter purpose is understood from the name as it separates the data connection and voice modulation. Two connections are made from the splitter to the DSL and one to the telephone. The speed of the data connection has a dependency over the splitter as well. The splitter should work well to manage the frequency of both. DSL connection is made through the phone connection and hence a phone service is provided if it is not available. This phone service will be without a dial tone.
Importance of DSL Connection
First thing first that by reading this we have an idea that DSL connection is fairly good in efficiency and speed. This is why we have to use the DSL connection in our homes and our workplaces. As we use telephone connection everywhere now, DSL connection can be easily established which is easy through telecom operators. We cannot compare the speed of regular modem with that of DSL connection and this is an example to use DSL connection.
Several wires and devices in the houses can be an annoyance as if one device is not working, it is difficult to find out which wire is connected to the particular device. DSL has an advantage over there as a particular wire connection is not needed for DSL connection as a telephone connection is already established. Also, this modem does not interrupt the phone services so that we can carry out using the internet while our family is speaking through a telephone.
Also, another point to note is that the modem is always free as an offer during the installation. Maybe telecom companies are creating business and building trust to the customers but yes, they provide it for free mostly. This makes DSL a better option for many while comparing the price. As many other modem services charge for modem extra price and this becomes a costly affair while installing the internet connection. Also, if we are not using a telephone connection, they provide some offers for the telephone connection to the households or offices.
The DSL internet connection stays as a private affair and it works fast even if neighbors use the internet. If cable connection is used, the internet connection has to be shared and the connection appears slow if there is a peak working time for all like peak traffic hours. The DSL connection is cheap and fast makes it a likable connection for all who want to use broadband services.
Conclusion
The availability and the low price make DSL attractive among customers. Also, with the install kit and with the instructions, we can do it by self and make it work. It is present more in urban areas and this might be a disadvantage for many.
