Introduction to UiPath and UiPath Versions

Automation is the new go-to for every technical solution. With increase in the demand for automation, there have been many tools for automation popping up. But the most reliable and heavily used tool to-date is UiPath. UiPath is a tool used for Robotic Process Automation (RPA).  In layman’s language, an RPA tool (UiPath in this case), is software, that helps in automation of otherwise mundane and repetitive tasks. Automating these tasks makes bandwidth for human resources, who were previously stuck in completing these everyday tasks. In this topic, we are going to learn about UiPath version.

UiPath is used to create bots, who do defined tasks as per scheduled. They require minimum maintenance once deployed and are easy to monitor. The bots are deployed in and monitored from an orchestrator. The automation flows run by the bots are created in UiPath Studio.

UiPath as a platform has a new version released to production every month. The current version is Feb-2021 and up-gradation has been done on Automation cloud and Orchestrator. Prior to that, in version Jan-2021,there were modifications released for studio, studioX, Orchestrator, robot and assistant. Hence, we know that UiPath as a platform has new modifications released every month.

UiPath Studio is available to users in various forms which will be further discussed in this article.

UiPath Editions and their details

Before learning about the various editions of UiPath, let us understand the components of UiPath. Every Robotic Process Automation has three components which are a Developments Studio, runtime bots and a control tower. In UiPath, UiPath studio is the development tools where the users can plan and create their workflows. These workflows are called runtime bots. These bots are run to complete a process defined in the workflow in a repetitive manner. These bots are deployed in, monitored and maintained within the Orchestrator. This Orchestrator is the control tower of UiPath. This is where users can run the workflows after deploying. This is where the run of bots is monitored and if failing, can be debugged.

Now that we have the understanding of the components in UiPath, let us understand the editions of UiPath. There are two types of UiPath edition which are Community Edition and Enterprise Edition. The Enterprise edition is further sub-divided into Server Edition and Cloud Edition.

Community Edition is the one which is zero-cost and accessible to all. It is available for free and can be downloaded from the official website for UiPath. This version offers two studios for creation and modifications of workflows. To deploy and run these workflows there are two robots available. And the orchestrator provided in this edition is hosted on the cloud. Users who signs up for this edition also has full access to UiPath Academy, where they can learn about UiPath. There is forum support provided with this edition too.  In addition to all of this, it is to be noted that Community edition is easily upgradable to Enterprise edition, which is available at a certain cost.

Enterprise edition currently provides on-premise services. This edition is meant for process flows for huge businesses. Here, the users have access to unlimited studios for working on creation and modifications of workflows. To run these workflows, there are unlimited robots available. The orchestrator also, instead of being cloud-based, is on-premise. Since the components are on-premise in this editions, the updates are self managed and need to be done by the user or administrator when required. For learners, this edition provides trainers, who can help the users with any issue related to UiPath.

The Cloud version of Enterprise Edition is currently in review. Very similar to the server or on-premise edition, cloud edition offers limitless studios and unlimited robots. The orchestrator in this case is cloud based. Since the components are hosted on a cloud, the entire setup is always up to date and there is no need for the administrator to manage updates. Also, the cloud version of enterprise edition offers a centrally managed user access. This helps in deciding to what extent must a user be given access. If there is any kind of learning needed, the official training partners are always available. Being hosted on cloud, the cloud edition is completely secure and sans of any kind of threat be it data loss or data leak. This is fully compliant.

UiPath Licenses

There are three types of licenses available for the user. Namely, Community License, Local License and Orchestrator provided License. Community License is a periodic and renewable license. It can be obtained online and is free of cost. It lasts for a defined period of time, post which the user can get it renewed.

Local License is the second type of license available to UiPath. This license comes into play, when UiPath is activated using a stand-alone trial version of the enterprise edition or if there is a license key available. Using this license, the enterprise edition of UiPath is activated. However, if not already connected to an orchestrator, the user needs to acquire an external license to connect to the online orchestrator.

The third and final type of license is the one which is obtained from the orchestrator. It has subtypes, which are, Attended, Unattended, Studio (Studio Pro and Studio X) and Non-production. If license is Attended, user can run or debug the processes. It does not allow any kind of modifications on the workflows. If it is Studio license, user will be able to debug, modify and run the processes. User will only have the access for troubleshooting processes, if the license is Non-Production and it is the same case with Unattended License.

Conclusion – UiPath version

In the above article, we dug into UiPath Editions, UiPath licenses, and how the version is controlled for particular applications. This is a good tool for the development environment and can reduce a lot of human efforts that otherwise go to waste in daily repetitive tasks. The users have the option to select which edition they want as long as their work is not hampered by a requirement that is not provided in that particular edition.
