#1 Meenakshi Amman Temple

Meenakshi Amman Temple

Shree Meenakshi Temple is one of the famous religious places in South India and is named after Mata Parvati. It has over 6 hectares of land and is honored in the name of Lord Shiva.

The temple was once destroyed by Malik Kapur as a result of an invasion but was later restored by the Hindu Kings. As you visit, you would see a thousand pillars depicting people’s architectural hard work. All the statues and museums there are beautiful.

#2 Alagar Koyil Temple

This temple is situated 21 km away from the city of Madurai and is set in the Alagar Hills’ foothills. It is a dedication to Lord Vishnu and marks the religious and historical significance of the place.

The temple was visited quite frequently by Malayadwaja Pandyan, a Pandyan king. When you see the carvings on the walls, you would see carvings and mandapams. This makes it one of the famous tourist places in Madurai.

#3 Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple

According to history, six places were selected by Murugan, the god, and this is one of them. The place is where Murugan was married to Devasena and is also where the moon and sun abide. Thirupparankundram cave temple is dedicated to one of the Earth’s elements. Several classical texts of Tamil say that this hill is Southern Himalaya.

If you love to learn about history and tradition, you should add this to the bucket list of tourist places in Madurai. It also has a shrine of Islam dedicated to Sekunder.

#4 Samanar Hills

Samanar Hills is located 10 km away from the Meenakshi Temple, and its caves were earlier used by the Samanar (Jains). According to religious history, the place is there since 1 AD, and all those Jain carvings and scriptures look so beautiful. Anyone can spend hours staring at those walls and thinking about how serene they look.

You can also check out the view of the entire Madurai from the hilltop. Here, a natural fountain, ‘Pechchi Palam,’, is a major attraction. You can relax and spend some alone time in one of these tourist places in Madurai. It has a lotus pond and is even a great spot for trekking!

#5 Pazhamudhir Solai

The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is one of the famous tourist destinations. Even this place is one of the six abodes of the god. Everywhere you would see wood and marble sculptures that look quite pristine. There are some giant footsteps ahead of the temple that makes for an interesting climb.

#6 Gandhi Museum

We’ve talked enough about the temples so let’s see a few museums! One of the renowned tourist places in Madurai is Gandhi Museum. It is constructed in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi and was constructed by Nayak Queen Rani (1670).

Inaugurated in 1959, you can see a beautiful Picture Gallery here with the complete visual biography of Gandhiji. This museum also has a hall of Relics with a few duplicate and original belongings of Mahatma Gandhi. There is also a great collection of books about the cultural background of India.
