#1 Rock Garden

The Rock Garden was started in 1957 by NEK CHAND, who secretly worked on it in his spare time. The concept of a lost kingdom served as inspiration for the design of the garden. Similar to the forecourt, it consists of 14 different chambers.

The 35-acre Rock Garden Chandigarh is a sustainable garden made entirely of industrial and municipal waste. Things like bangles, ceramic pots, tiles, bottles, and e-waste are utilized to create sculptures. Landscape, architecture, sculpture, and mythology combined in one garden. The rock garden is a tourist attraction, especially during the Teej Festival.

#2 Sukhna Lake

It is a 3 square kilometer rain-fed lake formed in 1958 by damming Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming downside from the Shivalik Hills. Sukhna Lake is a haven for different exotic migratory birds during winter. E.g., Siberian ducks, storks, and cranes. The lake has been declared a national wetland by the Indian government.

It serves as a venue for numerous festive events, including the Mango Festival in the monsoon season. Sukhna Lake has a long rowing and sailing canal in Asia.

#3 War Memorial

With nearly 8459 names of fallen soldiers of the Army, Air Force, and Navy since 1947, the memorial is the largest war memorial in the country after independence. It was the creation in honor of Jawans.

It was inaugurated in 2006 by the late APJ Abdul Kalam. It also has a seating area that resembles a terrace, making it the ideal place for an open-air theater that puts on a light and sound show.

#4 Natural History Museum

The museum consists of 5 galleries.

i. Evolution of the Non-Gallery: Various models of fossils are present in this gallery. This gallery also contains dioramas of different species of Homo sapiens – Neanderthal and Homo Erectus.

ii. Gallery of Dinosaurs of India: The gallery covers the Mesozoic, Triassic, and Jurassic period development.

iii. Gallery of the Evolution of Life: It shows how the earth gradually evolved over billions of years into a place that could host and support life.

iv. Redefining the Past: Fossils from the Masal region are on display here.

v. Gallery “Our Mother Earth: Huge boulders of different types and ages are present here.

#5 National Gallery of Portraits

It was established in 1977 in the center of Chandigarh. The museum houses a rich and diverse collection of portraits, busts, sculptures, paintings, prints of rare documents, photographs, and pictures inspired by India’s struggle for independence. It is the best Tourist Places in Chandigarh.

The large rectangular half of the museum consists of 41 information panels detailing the movements and actions during India’s protracted struggle for independence from British rule.

The major attraction:

  • Ghadar movement and episodes of Kamagatamaru.
  • Newspapers print the pictures of the victims.
  • Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi is pictured.
  • The burning of foreign clothes during the Swadeshi movement is depicted in a fabric painting of the Taj Mahal diorama.
