Principles of Project Management

Introduction to Principles of Project Management

Project management is an art, which tells how to manage different projects with different requirements etc. It is a very cumbersome task because handling people, resources and other equipment at one time is so difficult. So there are some specified principles that are to be followed during the project management. These principles are universal and effective in every type of project and setting. The manager who handles all the tasks and manages all the things in a project needs good skills and experience. Project management is no easy task, but for one who learns the process of management, this becomes very easy for him.

Top 6 Principles of Project Management

There are basically 6 principles that prevailed, which are as follows:

Principles of Project Management-1.2

1. Vision and Mission

A vision or objective is necessary to complete any work on time and with full quality because it acts as a road map for executing the project. In project management also the same thing is applicable, vision and mission is the first principle of it because without an objective it is very hard to complete a project on time and also it consumes more resources, etc. It should be clear in mind what is to be done and what are the steps. For example, how many persons are required for a specific task and other essential commodities, etc., is only possible when there is a vision. Also, Every company that handles the different projects they first prepare the full policy and then proceed, so the sole motto of policy is to clear the vision of what, when, and where is to be done in the project.

2. Business Objectives

The sole motto of every organization is to get profit. To earn profit from work, it should be quality full, and there is a need for good marketing. So for the whole of this, an objective is required first, which contains some short-term goals. It helps the organization to save time, resources and results in good profit. A business objective is that’s why considered as the second principle of project management. Also, we can say that a business is successful when there is a proper schedule, a clear vision, and a zeal to do work with proper dedication.

3. Standards of Engagements

If we talk about the next principle of project management, so it is “standards of engagements”. This principle basically talks about the workforce or employees who work for the project. Access to this, there should be a pre-defined list and hierarchy of positions that handle which responsibility and what are the specific duties of a particular position. The main agenda behind this separation of duties is to make every employee accountable for their work. Also, a sense of responsibility is very important in every project so that everyone stays connected to their duties.

4. Intervention and Execution Strategy

During the execution of the project and at any stage of the project, it is quite often that some problems may occur. So this is the challenge for the whole team: how to tackle that problem so that it may not influence the result. Thus, the next principle emerges, known as the “Intervention and execution strategy”, by keeping in view this problem. According to this principle, whenever an issue or a problem occurs in the project, there should be a permanent fixation of that problem so that it may not repeat in the future. Also, every project staff’s duty is to put their contribution and idea to resolve a particular problem if it occurs.

5. Organizational Alignment

This principle is like the bedrock for the whole project management strategy because if we understand this principle, deeply we see that this principle talks about the proper alignment of the organization, which means that there should be a proper channel in the communication, whether it is flowing from top to bottom and whether it is from bottom to top. This is important because communication plays an important role in the project. Like if there are some changes in the policy of the project and there is no proper communication, it may hit the performance at last. So there should be “Organisational alignment” in every firm.

6. Measurement and Accountability

Finally, when the project is completed, there should be a proper measurement of all the parameters so that every doubt would be cleared before delivery. Also, measurement leads to accountability because if there is some fault in some part of the project, the employee who works on that part is solely accountable for that. So the principle of “Measurement and accountability” is to act as a check and balance for the whole project, and this is not an exaggeration to say that this is the sole of the project management. As far as the other dimensions are concerned regarding accountability, all are taken care of in this.

Conclusion

We had discussed all the principles of project management in a detailed manner, and we learn that these principles are very important for every project, but there are also some cons of these principles, or we can say that there is a need for changes in these principles as well. If we talk about the present scenario, everything is going modernized and with these many changes are occurring in the working pattern of different projects but still, now we are using these traditional principles to run the project which needs new ideas and modern principles because in new projects there are more stringent peculiarities. So to address these problems in the new world, there is a need for new and advanced principles that understand the present scenario and provide a solution to such a problem. If this thing is not possible, then there is also an option of amendment in these principles by adding some new thoughts and ideas instead of focusing on new principles.
