History of Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep has a really long history that goes way back to ancient times. It was a big deal for traders traveling from the Malabar coast to other places worldwide. Over the years, different groups like Arabs, Portuguese, Islamic, and the British have left their mark on the area. The Chola dynasty played a big role in shaping the islands’ culture.
Even with all these outside influences, the people of Lakshadweep have kept their own unique traditions and way of life. The place is famous for its lively festivals, traditional dances, and beautiful handmade crafts, showing its rich cultural history. Lakshadweep became a part of independent India in 1947; later, in 1956, it became a Union Territory of India.

The KLI-SOFC project in Lakshadweep is a big achievement. It will connect eleven islands with a submarine optic fiber cable for the first time. The Department of Telecommunications funds it, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited oversees its execution. This project aligns with the goals of ‘Digital India’ and ‘National Broadband Mission.’
The project will provide high-speed internet connectivity to improve:
- E-governance
- Tourism
- Education
- Health
- Commerce
- Industries
The project aims to enhance the living standards and contribute to socio-economic development on the islands. The technology employed includes Fibre to the Home (FTTH) and 5G/4G mobile networks, with accessible bandwidth for all Telecom Service Providers to enhance telecom services on the island.
3. Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination
The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is establishing a new Green and Self-powered Desalination Plant on an island to provide clean drinking water. The current desalination plants use diesel generators, which are not eco-friendly.
However, this plant will use a new technology called Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD), which is emission-free. The new plant will produce 100,000 liters of drinking water each day for six islands in Lakshadweep using green technology.
4. Solar Power Plant
Lakshadweep Energy Development Agency (LEDA) is building a new solar power plant to reduce diesel-based power generation.
This shift towards sustainable energy will save:
- Rs 250 crores over the project’s lifespan
- Diesel consumption by 190 lakh liters
- 58,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions
The agency has hired experts for the Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) process.
5. Airport Proposal
In the coming years, people may have better air connectivity between Lakshadweep and mainland India, as well as other parts of the world. This could happen by building an airfield in Minicoy that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. This airfield will be able to accommodate planes like the Airbus and Boeing 737, along with fighter jets.
The plan also includes extending a 1.2-kilometer airstrip in Agatti over two decades. This extension would allow A320s to operate on Agatti, replacing the smaller turboprop planes currently used.
Apart from these, they also proposed developing household tap connections, renovating healthcare centers, building Anganwadi, and undertaking drinking water distribution projects.
