Gangotri Temple

Gangotri Dham Temple

Gangotri temple is famous because it is known for the worship of Ganga. Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand is known for the Gangotri temple, which is about 3000 meters above sea level. History of Gangotri Temple

Gangotri Temple carries an ancient history. Gurkha General Amar Singh Thapa supervises the construction of the temple. Sudarshan Shah, the then-King of Garhwal, oversaw and assumed responsibility for the temple’s construction.

According to Hindu scriptures, the King believed that Goddess Ganga came down from the heavens to Earth. So, he wanted to build a temple devoted to Goddess Ganga at the place where he touched the ground for the first time. Also, the tributary of the Ganga, the Bhagirathi River, is said to be divine.

During the trip, consider taking a dip in the holy river, Bhagirathi. It is a guarantee that one will feel and witness an incredible experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Architecture of Gangotri Temple

Initially, Amar Sing, a Nepaleese General, built this temple around the 18th century. Later, Maharaja of Jaipur rebuilt it in the Nagara style of Architecture with white marble stone. Overall there are five Shikaram’s of height approx 20 feet. The main sanctorum has Garbha Griha, which contains the idol of Goddess Ganga. In front of that is a mandap where people perform puja. The idols of Goddess Annapurna, Yamuna, Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Sage Bhagirath, and Sage Adi Shankara complete the set of idols in the temple.

How to Reach Gangotri Temple?

  • The temple is in the town of Gangotri. You can reach here by all three modes of transport, i.e., by road, rail, or air.
  • Book your tickets to the nearest Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun to get here by air. The airport is 260 km away from the temple.
  • While choosing the railway, book the tickets for Rishikesh Junction. This station is the nearest railway station to the location. It is approximately 200 kilometers from the town.

Places to Visit Nearby

The Gangotri temple is itself a wonder. April to November is the visiting time. After exploring the temple, visit the sacred river, the Bhagirathi. It is said to be one of the holy rivers of India. Take a dip in the river and witness a spiritual experience. Another similar and nearby place to visit is the Kedarnath Temple. It is approximately 110 kilometers away. Additionally, the Gaumukh Glacier is another essential place to stay near the location. The holy river Bhagirathi emerges from this glacier. It is 18 kilometers away from the area.

Budget and Cost Estimation

To visit this place, you should fix your budget around INR 15,000–20,000. To save money, you should avoid taking frequent private taxis. Try to travel on public transport such as the railroad or government buses. Moreover, add the cost of lodging and food, which ranges from INR 1,000 to 4,000 per night.
