Introduction to Digital Computer
Digital computer is nothing but a digital system that performs various computational tasks. To perform tasks, the digital computer uses a binary number system that has two digits 1 and 0. A binary digit is called a bit. It uses electronic technology to generate, process, and store the different types of data. Based on the types and size of the device, these digital computers are divided into 4 types namely Micro computer, Mini computer, Mainframe computer, and Super computer. In this article, we are going to discuss the types of digital computers in detail.

A micro computer is a small, relatively inexpensive computer with a microprocessor as its CPU ( Central Processing Unit). It consists of microprocessor, memory, and minimal input/output (I/O) circuitry mounted on a single printed circuit board (PCB). Some microcomputer systems include additional components such as timers, counters, and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). It comes equipped with at least one type of data storage. Usually, the storage type is RAM. Some micro computers perform the task using ram alone, secondary storage is normally desirable. For input and output, it uses the keyboard, monitor, and other devices.
These devices may be integrated or separated. computer memory, are in the form of RAM and at least one other less volatile memory storage device is combined with a CPU on a bus system in one unit. It allows only one user at a time. To allow more than one user, there is a need for modification in software and hardware. Microcomputers are quite light and easy to handle because of their small size and feather-like weight. A microcomputer that are consists of a single silicon chip is called a micro controller. These micro controllers are used in many everyday household goods such as personal computers, digital watches, microwave ovens, digital TV sets, TV remote control units (CUs), cookers, hi-fi equipment, CD players, personal computers, fridges, etc.
Mini computer is a computer that has the same functionality as large computers but appears in a smaller size. Mini computer is smaller than a mainframe computer but larger than a micro computer. Mobile phones, tablet PCs, laptops, desktop mini-computer, high-end MP3 players are some of the examples of mini computers. Mini computers are mainly used by businesses to manage the process of production. Mimi computers are less in cost as compared to supercomputer and mainframe computers. It is more powerful than a micro computer but no powerful as a super computer and a mainframe computer. This computer has the ability to handle one or more processors. It allows multiple users at a time and supports multitasking and multiprocessing to perform a number of the task at a time. Mini computer is also known as minis.
3. Mainframe computer
Mainframe computers are the computers that are used in large organizations to manage critical operations such as bulk data processing, transaction processing, and enterprise resource planning. The performance is relatively higher than any other system, and a large amount of memory and processors are used in the systems. These systems are mainly used by large IT companies, Walmart, NASA, etc. It consists of two components JCL and COBOL. JCL is Job Control Language, an authoritative and stretchy language that facilitates operating and customizing remote resources for computers. COBOL is a Common Business Oriented Language used to process the data in business sectors as a high-level language.
The system has a centralized server that has multiple operating systems and allows managing the operations in a centralized manner. This makes the system to be efficient with higher performance and less workload to individual operating systems. There is an inbuilt capability in the mainframe computers to process massive chunks of data and can also support the complicated applications to run with high computing speed. The complex applications can be developed and run on mainframes computer. Mainframe computer uses advanced security mechanisms to protect and large scale organization and provides extra security. At a time multiple applications can be run in the system without affecting the performance of the system.
Super computer is a computer with a High level of performance as compared to a general-purpose computer. Instead of MIPS (Million instructions per second), Its performance is measured in FLOPS (Floating point operations per second) format. It plays important role in the computer science field, used in various fields such as climate research, weather forecasting, molecular modeling, quantum mechanics, o and gas exploration, polymers, biological macro molecules, and crystals.
Supercomputers are purpose-specific computers that are designed for scientists and engineers to solve complex mathematical and scientific calculations requiring large amounts of memory and excellent speed to execute them. These are the fastest computers in the world designed to solve problems which can never be done by any other computers. The cost of Supercomputers is quite high. It contains more than one CPU which interprets the program instructions and executes the arithmetic and logic operation in proper sequence.
