It’s similar to the abbreviation AFK, also known as “Away From Keyboard.” When one wants to take a break for anything, one can use AFK and BRB interchangeably. Both forms can also be employed parallelly. For instance, a user says “AFK, BRB” to let readers know they are away from the computing device for a few minutes but will return shortly.

It can also be applied to the idioms “keep that thinking” or “hold fast.” When one uses these with BRB, it instructs the other individual to halt what they are talking about and resume when the other user returns.

The Start of BRB

In the 1990s, BRB first started in online chat rooms. Most people couldn’t set their status to “away” or “offline” in the older beginnings of Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Later, the functionality became common in Direct Messaging (DM) services. Entering “BRB” informed others in the conversation that the user would stay disconnected from the computer for a short while.

The first explanation of BRB in the Urban Dictionary is from April 2003. However, it was implemented online a long time previously than in the Urban Dictionary. BRB was also commonly used with “G2G,” a nowadays not-famous online abbreviation, “Got to Go.” The individual’s behavior, such as “having a bottle of water” or “picking up the phone,” was frequently followed by G2G.

BRB in Online Chat

When speaking or texting with others, BRB is generally applied. It is appropriate for use with coworkers, friends, relatives, and even in official work settings. Compared to other online acronyms, BRB is only sometimes informal, and one can also use it at work.

One can use BRB outside of online chat rooms and social networking sites like Whatsapp, Instagram, Telegram, Gmail, and many more. Many websites are temporarily disabled, and these websites display “BRB” on the main page to inform users that the website will be live shortly. In this situation, though, the acronym often alludes to a significantly extended period than a few minutes. It’s also a technique to be gracious so that the other operators don’t question why someone has not responded to anything for some time.

How to Implement BRB

It is simple to use BRB. Because BRB Full form stands for “Be Right Back,” Implemented in situations when that word would be appropriate. Here are some conversational scenarios of how to utilize BRB:

  • “I’m afraid I have to accept this conversation. BRB.”
  • “Can you stop the film? BRB.”
  • “Hold on there, BRB.”
  • “I’m going to take a bath. BRB.”

Conclusion

Although individuals are constantly linked to their gadgets nowadays, spending a bit longer to respond to someone’s text isn’t sometimes seen negatively. It may render the abbreviation BRB useless. Despite that, it does perform an essential function in attentive communication.

If a person is in the middle of a detailed genuine debate or through the message, it’s courteous to mention “BRB,” and they must depart abruptly. The same happens when a person hears someone tell a story. BRB is also generally applied during video conferences when others can see whether or not that person is on the computer.
