The Ratnagiri Temple, perched atop Ratnagiri Hill, is a revered place of worship dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, also known as Balaji, and his consort, Goddess Padmavati. Notably, the Annavaram Temple distinguishes itself as one of the few temples in India that offers worship services for both Vaishnavites and Shaivites. Visitors have the opportunity to offer prayers to either Lord Venkateswara or Lord Shiva.

Several other shrines and temples are within the temple complex, each dedicated to different deities such as Lords Ganesh, Hanuman, Lakshmi Narasimha, and Saibaba. Additionally, devotees can partake in the holy tradition of taking a dip in the water tank known as Pushkarini.

What are the Features of Annavaram Temple?

  • It is one of the most famous temples in India. It has a location in the state of Andhra Pradesh, on the banks of the River Godavari.
  • Lord Venkateswara, or Srinivasa or Balaji, is the temple’s deity. A giant idol of Lord Venkateswara, crafted from black granite, serves as the main deity. The idol, adorned with gold and diamond jewelry, presents a striking display of devotion. There are also several other smaller idols of gods and goddesses in the temple complex.
  • The Annavaram temple has many unique features. One of the most notable features is the presence of two large chariots outside the temple’s main entrance. The chariots used in religious celebrations, and parades transport deities during these events.
  • The temple boasts a vast flagpole, acclaimed as the tallest in Asia. Another unique feature of this temple is its two sets of stairs leading to the main shrine. One set of stairs is for those who wish to climb up to the shrine, while the other is for those who prefer to take a more gradual ascent.

How to Reach Annavaram Temple?

  • The small town of Annavaram in Andhra Pradesh, India, houses the Annavaram temple. The temple sits atop a hill called Ratnagiri, approximately 2 kilometers from the town center. There are a few ways to reach the temple, depending on your mode of transportation.
  • If you’re traveling by car or bike, the easiest way to reach the temple is by taking the road that leads up to Ratnagiri Hill. This road is well-marked and easy to follow. You can also park your vehicle at the mountain’s base and walk up to the temple, which takes around 20 minutes.
  • If you’re traveling by bus, there are a few options. You can take a direct bus from Hyderabad or Vijayawada that drops you off at Ratnagiri Hill. Alternatively, you can take a local bus from any town or village in Andhra Pradesh to Annavaram town center and then take another local bus or auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) up to Ratnagiri Hill.
  • The final option is to take a train to the nearby Tuni railway station and then take a bus or auto-rickshaw for the short journey to Ratnagiri Hill.

The Best Time to Visit

We recommend visiting the Annavaram Temple during the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May), when the temple festival is celebrated. The festival provides a unique opportunity to witness the traditional customs and rituals of the temple, offering an enriching and culturally immersive experience. Devotees from India flock to the temple during this festival to worship Murugan. The temple meticulously decorates itself with an array of oil lamps and various beautiful flowers, creating an ambiance of reverence and anticipation among the congregation.
