History

It is the most important religious site for Hindus in India. The state of Jammu and Kashmir locates the temple and devotes it to the Hindu goddess. Guru Gorakhnath is credited with establishing the temple in the 9th century. According to legend, the Goddess appeared to him in a dream and asked him to build a temple in her honor. Since then, the temple has been a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus from all over India. The temple has an all-around mountain situated at the cave entrance at an altitude of 5,200 feet. The cave houses three naturally formed rock formations depicting the Goddess’s three forms. Thousands of disciples visit the temple every year and offer their prayers.

Maa Vaishno Devi, also known as Vaishnavi, is worshipped in various forms representing power, wealth, and knowledge. According to Hindu mythology, she manifested on Earth as a young girl and chose the Trikuta Mountain cave in the Jammu region as her divine abode.
Devotees worldwide visit the temple to seek blessings from Maa Vaishno Devi, believing their sincere prayers and visits fulfill their wishes. Devotees revere the temple for its profound power and divine presence as the abode of the Goddess.

Festivals

The Vaishno Devi Temple, located in Jammu and Kashmir, is one of India’s most famous pilgrimage sites. Navratri, or the nine nights of the Goddess, is the most celebrated festival in the Vaishno Devi temple. During this festival, we worship the Goddess in her nine forms – Durga, Maheshwari, Kumari, Vaishnavi, Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Varahi, and Narasimhi. We mark the festival with special pujas, processions, bhajans, kirtans, and other offerings to the Goddess.

Another important festival is Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. On this occasion, devotees offer special puja to the Goddess and observe a fast. The Chaitra Navratri is also celebrated as an important festival in April or May. During this festival, devotees offer special puja to the Goddess and observe a fast.

The Vaishno Devi Yatra is also a famous festival in the temple. During this time, devotees pilgrimage the temple to seek the Goddess’ blessings. The yatra usually takes place in October or November. Another important festival celebrated in the temple is the Ratha Yatra. During this festival, the devotees take out a chariot carrying the Goddess in a procession. Devotees join the parade and offer their prayers to the Goddess.

The Maha Shivaratri is another important festival in the temple. On this day, devotees observe a fast and offer special puja to Lord Shiva. We perform special kirtans and poojas in her honor.
