Self-Image

By Jesal ShethnaJesal Shethna

Self-Image

Self-image refers to a person’s perception of themselves, including their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about their own personality traits, abilities, and physical appearance. It is shaped by a combination of internal and external factors, such as genetics, life experiences, relationships, culture, and societal norms.

  1. The image formed by the individual about himself, how he perceives himself.
  2. The notion created in the minds of people and how they perceive you
  3. And the individual makes the third image based on what others think of him.

But we must recognize that these three kinds of self-image are only partially accurate.

Self-Image is either positive or negative.

Creating the kind of self-image you want lies in your confidence in yourself. If you are a confident person, you will automatically create a positive self-image not only in your mind but also in the mind of your peers. You must work smart to get to the positive side if you need confidence.

Importance of Positive Self-Image

A positive self-image is important for mental and emotional well-being, as it can lead to greater self-confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. On the other hand, a negative self-image can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, low self-worth, and self-doubt.

It is one of the biggest mistakes committed by anyone to think that creating a positive self-image is a challenging task. Like any other skill, developing a positive self-image is equally tasking.

The first step towards creating a positive self-image would be to adopt a positive attitude and focus on personal development. However, remember that this positive attitude should be within the realms of reality. You need to feel confident in yourself. You need to appreciate yourself for who you are.

A positive self-image is not for anybody else but for making life easier. The motive behind improving self-image is to create an individual’s self-accepting attitude and make them strive to outperform themselves. Work inside out. Once you have enough confidence in yourself, there is no problem big enough in the world that will stop you from achieving your goals and ambitions.

Steps

Your guide to creating a positive self-image for yourself is here! All you need to do is to follow some simple steps written here, and you are good to go! You need to bring some little changes to your lifestyle to get that positive self-image!

1. Stop Criticizing Yourself

STOP CRITICIZING YOURSELF! No good will come out of you if you beat yourself up for little mistakes. You are, after all, a human; you are programmed to commit errors and learn from them. That is how it is going to be. Criticizing yourself will only make you feel less confident, making you look negative on the outside. No one will believe in you if you don’t make them believe in you. Start by forgiving yourself for the mistakes committed by you and learning from those mistakes for your future reference. After all, these experiences make up a person’s self-image. If you keep holding these ‘experiences’ in a negative light, then how can you expect to get a positive result out of them? Learn to forgive yourself. Trust me; this is the best thing you can do for yourself.

2. When you look in the mirror, Smile

A simple smile to yourself can do wonders for your self-image, make you feel confident, and help you work harder for your goals. This smile will portray a good self-image in others’ eyes. It will not only help you look good on the outside because who doesn’t like a smiling person but also make you feel good on the inside. And how hard is it to smile, even if it is fake? Even a fake smile can do wonders in lifting your bad mood. Do try smiling; it is a wonderful gift and free.

3. List ten things that you like about yourself before going to bed

There are many nice things in a person; all you have to do is recognize them, write them down, and remind yourself about them daily. It will help you realize that you are not as bad as you perceive yourself. And hence it will improve your perception of yourself, creating a positive self-image. There is nothing worse than not realizing your self-worth. Just take a pen and a piece of paper and list all the things you like about yourself. It can be as small as your haircut that looks good on you or as big as some recent show of confidence in yourself. Thinking about these things will enhance your confidence limits and morale. From your eyes to your smile to how you dress, anything and everything will do. The important thing here is how it makes you feel.

4. Get lots of sleep

What is better for your confidence, getting enough sleep and feeling fresh and happy when you wake up or being underslept, cranky, and irritable? It wouldn’t take a genius to answer that. So sleep well, sleep right, and sleep enough to have that perfect mood, confidence, and willpower throughout the day.

It can do wonders for your self-image in others’ eyes. No one likes to be around a cranky or frustrated person who does not have the willpower to complete a task. As it is said, Well begun is half done.

5. Wear Flattering Clothes

Imagine two girls sitting in front of you; one is wearing clothes that suit her body type, and the other is wearing the most fashionable clothes and everything that is in trend but does not know how to carry them; who would have a better self-image? Of course, the one who wears flattering clothes!

Impress yourself first more than anybody else. Here let me bring to your attention the meaning of the term flattering, it doesn’t just mean trendy clothes, but it represents what looks good on you, what you feel comfortable with. So wear the clothes you feel good in, that look good on you, even if they are not, particularly in fashion. Why wear something you don’t like and don’t feel confident about and hence, in turn, bring down your self-image? Instead, wear what you love and turn your idea positively.

6. Make your hair look good, and wear make-up if you want to

Want to dye your hair? Get them dyed!

What to get your hair cut short? Go for it!

Want to wear that nice dress you bought? Get up and wear it!

Don’t stop yourself from doing anything that will make you happy. Instead, do exactly those things! If you want to wear make-up and look good, don’t stop yourself. Stop worrying about what people will think about your self-image! They will think what you want them to think!

7. Do things that interest you

All your life, you have done things others wanted you to do. For once, do something that you have wanted to do! Be the person that you have always dreamed of Becoming! You are changing yourself inside out; what could be better than this? Go on the road trip that you have always wanted! Do something that you have always wanted to do! These experiences can make a real difference in your confidence level. You need to break all limits!

8. Be Yourself

You are crazy and stupid, be that!

You are smart and sophisticated, be that!

You are calm and composed, be that!

Be the best version of yourself! I know it is a clichéd sentence, but it makes much more sense when you consider it a lifestyle! Don’t try and fulfill someone else’s idea of perfection. It will only bring down your confidence! Quite the opposite of what you want! Plus, you will never feel confident wearing someone else’s skin! Be your idea of perfect! You won’t even have to try that hard to fulfill that idea! And also, you won’t have to be conscious of what you are doing all the time! Be yourself! Be at ease! Imagine the confidence boost that it will give you!

9. Write down all your traits, Good and Bad

We all have something good and bad in ourselves. No one is perfect, but writing it down will help us recognize the balance.

  • Writing down good things in us will help us feel confident in ourselves! Help us recognize our worth!
  • Writing down the bad things will help us change those things in us for good! You need to recognize and accept them and consciously try to change them.

The newfound confidence in your self-image will help you realize the talents in yourself that you never thought you had or you had long forgotten.

10. Just let loose and Have Fun

“You will only get one life to live, and if you live it right, then one is enough!” we have all heard this but never really gave much thought to it! Well, now will be a good time to do that! Now since you are doing all you can to change your image, why not just have fun while doing that? Go all crazy and do whatever you have always wanted to do! Tick off all the things from your bucket list!

These steps might seem trivial and appear like something that doesn’t need much hard work, but when you get down to doing them, they are quite some work, Trust Me! But all you need to do is be persistent in what you are doing! The results might be slow, but they will show! Come on. You CAN do this for yourself! You SHOULD do this for yourself!

Conclusion

With this article, we explained that self-image basically means what you portray yourself as, not only in the terms of your physical appearance but also in terms of the experiences you have had in your life and the lessons that you have learned from them.
