PHP Stack Overflow

Definition of PHP Stack Overflow

Stack Overflow in programming is a kind of error that can cause a serious issue to our program and make it even stop to respond as excepted. Stack Overflow is the same in every programming language and if we talk about PHP they also behave the same as expected. In this problem, some computer programs start taking more and more memory than actual availability. In a programming language, we have a call stack which is responsible to handle the request and keep them it is nothing but a buffer. In the coming section, we will discuss more the Stack overflow error in detail.

Syntax:

Web development, programming languages, Software testing & others

As we know that it is an error occurred so we do not have any syntax to make it occur, it usually occurs when a part of the program tries to occupy more space than available. Let’s see output buffering to get some fatal error in a programming language.

e.g. :

1) max_execution_time()

2) set_time_limit()

3) etc

As you can see in the above lines of code we can use some functions and assign some values to get fatal errors in PHP or any programming language. We can also get out of memory issue if we try to use memory more than available. But there is no syntax for this error because this is not a method or utility, it can occur any time when we try to use more resources than available. In the coming section, we will see in more details about its working.

How does stack overflow work in PHP?

As now we know that stack overflow is an error that can cause our program to terminate and behave undesirably. This is not an exception but rather it is an error in PHP. In a programming language, we have a call stack which is nothing but a buffer, responsible to handle the request. In short, it decides the memory which is to be allocated to a program and the size of the call stack depends on several factors in PHP. In programming language we decide the size of at the start of the program execution, let’s see some factors which is responsible to decide the size of the call stack see below;

1) language of the program

2) Architecture of the program

3) Last is the total amount of memory available.

Stack overflow error demands a very large amount of than available and this results in the error and may crash the system as well. sometimes it may demand all the memory available in the system. This is the part of the program which can cause this situation. In short, it is the error that occurs when we try to use more and more memory than the allocated memory for or program. We may have a certain program where we are trying to call methods from the methods, suppose we have 4-5 methods which are calling continuously from each other like function A() calls function b() it turn calls function c() followed by the function D() and so on, but at the end when we got the input it may cause the function or these loop of methods to be run infinite times and it will continue to run after this we may realize that it had occupied the stack memory than allocated to it. When we use recursion in PHP or in any programming language we can cause the stack overflow or any fatal error if the function is not used or handled properly, so it is always recommended to use global variables or static variables to prevent the infinite loop in recursion as well. This error is something we cannot control because memory, stack, call stack, or other factors are control by the system which we cannot control or manage at our end so we should always do one thing to analyze our code and how we can avoid calling functions in a loop or if we are using recursion than we should handle this very carefully. To prevent this, we can perform system testing and also write a few of the test cases to have look at it.

We can prevent this type of fatal error to occur in a programming language by some precautions see below;

1) Perform system testing

2) Avoid using recursion or check strictly

3) Calling of function from one another or in a loop should be avoided, we should also check the local variable and try to optimize the code as much as possible because the local variable also occupies the space in the system. It is a runtime error that occurs when the program runs out of memory because of some unusual event in programming.

Points to remember while working with error in PHP;

  • Stack overflow errors occur because of memory consumption more than allocated.
  • This can be prevented by optimize code, try to analyze the local variable as well
  • Recursion should be strictly analyzed, if we are using recursion then try to use the static or global variables to prevent it from begin stuck in infinite loops.
  • This is not a function or method this is an error that may crash the system if not handled properly.

Examples

1) In this example we are trying to run a loop infinite times. This will run infinite times and may lead to a stack overflow error. Once the stack or call stack memory will be occupied it will lead to a stack overflow error. Below is the simple program for beginners to understand it better see below;

Code:

<?php
print("Demo for stack overflow in php !! ");
while (1){
print("will run infinite time and lead to stack overflow when the stack overblown !!!");
}
?>

Output:

PHP stack overflow

Conclusion

Stack overflow is the error that can cause or lead to a system crash. to prevent this error we can take some caution while coding, also can optimize our code, etc. Testing should also be performed to prevent this from occurring. This is a runtime error that occurs at runtime only.
