IntelliJ vs NetBeans

Difference Between IntelliJ vs NetBeans

The programming environment where we can program in different languages with an integrated development environment is called IntelliJ. It can be used in community and commercial editions as well and is developed by JetBrains. Initially released in 2001, IntelliJ is highly compatible and meant for Java. Intellij Idea says that they have an intelligent idea and would like to code the same. NetBeans IDE is also developed for Java with different software components. It is new software, and we can program in many languages in this IDE as well. Desktop applications can also be developed with the help of NetBeans.

Key differences between IntelliJ vs NetBeans

Let us discuss some key differences between IntelliJ vs NetBeans in the following points:

  • Android support and development can be done in IntelliJ, while in NetBeans, we cannot do the same. IntelliJ is Android’s official IDE for development.
  • More plugins for software development are available in Intelli and fewer plugins in NetBeans. Plugins help to add application levels to the codes written in the platform.
  • IntelliJ has both a community version and a commercial version where development is done in the commercial version. Hence, money should be paid, and the software requires more space in the system. Unlike Intellij, NetBeans does not require much space and is available for free as it is open source.
  • Git integration is done in both the applications, where it is done with the help of command lines in IntelliJ. This may slow down the system. Whereas, in NetBeans, git integration does not slow down the system, and it is perfect for anyone to program in NetBeans.
  • When compared with IntelliJ, NetBeans is faster and integrates the environment in a better manner. Also, it is lighter in memory and helps the developer to code network programming. IntelliJ does not have any of these attributes in its kit. Being stable makes IntelliJ better software for bigger applications. The functionalities are more and have more functions in the software.
  • The community participation and development of plugins are in both the software, but the community is stronger in IntelliJ as it was developed and is still controlled by a single company and has faithful members with it.
  • As the name suggests, IntelliJ Idea completes the code by itself. Smart completion is a main feature of Intellij. Though smart completion is not available in NetBeans, the latest technologies are available only in NetBeans.
  • Code analysis is done faster, and the compilation is also sooner in IntelliJ. NetBeans will take some time, and the code editing is done in a better way.
  • We can create projects in both applications, but the project management is in an orderly fashion in NetBeans. The efficient project management technologies help the application to manage the coding and the programming in the application. Project management efficiency is not great in IntelliJ.
  • Modern technologies and more useful features are used more in IntelliJ, and hence it is considered as an intelligent application. This title is not given to NetBeans by the developers.

Comparison Table of IntelliJ vs NetBeans

The table below summarizes the comparisons between IntelliJ vs NetBeans:

IntelliJ NetBeans
The application is not cross-platform and becomes slow if ever used as cross-platform. The application is cross-platform and has many languages to be used in its IDE.
IntelliJ works well for Java and supports other languages in its IDE. NetBeans works well for all languages and supports Java in the IDE.
The application has the top rating and is considered as the best IDE by the developers. The application has many features and has good community support, which makes it one of the best IDE.
All the languages work well and have complete support from the IDE. The language PHP finds it difficult to work in the IDE as the support is less.
The memory it accesses and stores the codes is large, and hence the application needs constant updates. The application requires less memory in the system.
The IDE requires constant reindexing due to the large memory and space. The application does not require reindexing, and the system is free from bugs in the application. The application is secure.
Advanced refactoring makes it dearest for customers, along with its code analysis. Advanced refactoring is not present but has several tool editors for all the languages.
Analytical tools are supported in the application, such as Python and SQL, among other programming languages. Web technologies are supported the most in the application, such as HTML, among others.
The database support is not applicable, but android support and development make it the best android studio among other IDEs. The database support is more prominent than analytical tools, and hence android development is not an option here.
The software works with the help of plugins, and there are as many as 900 plugins in the system. Through plugins are used, there are only very few plugins, and the app works on its own support.
Plugins are accepted and used by users as the community is strong. Plugins are taken into account from the community but checked thoroughly, and not all the plugins are made to use in the application.
Working with tables in IntelliJ is a difficult task. We can easily work with tables in the application. Creation, deletion, and updating of the tables is done easily due to SQL support.
IntelliJ has no predecessor and works on its own. But it has occupied its space in the IDE world. This has derived from Eclipse and now is a competitor for the eclipse in the market.
The application works well with its enterprise edition, which is not free. The application is open-source, and developers find it easy to work with NetBeans.
Users are given preference, but the customer aspects are less in the application. The User Interface is not easy to understand for beginners as it appears complicated. NetBeans is more user-friendly, and customer-oriented aspects are huge.

Conclusion

Both applications are best in their own ways. While one needs high memory, the other does not support Android. Their limitations and advantages make it dearest for the programmers to use for coding and development. This article helps the developers to select from any one of the applications.
