OSHA 10 Card

Introduction to OSHA 10 Card

If you work in industries where safety risks are common, you may have heard about OSHA training. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) developed these courses to help reduce workplace injuries. In fact, the number of workplace injuries has decreased over time, but in 2022, private industries still reported 2.8 million injuries (data for 2023 will be available in November 2024). Among OSHA’s most popular programs are OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 courses, which provide essential safety training for workers. For most workers, the OSHA 10 card is the starting point for basic safety knowledge. But how long does this certification last? Do you need to renew it?

Let’s understand what an OSHA 10 card is and how long it lasts.

What is an OSHA 10 Card?

An OSHA 10 card is a certification that workers receive after completing a 10-hour safety training course. This training helps workers identify and prevent safety hazards in their workplaces.

There are two types of OSHA 10 courses:
1. OSHA 10 for General Industry
2. OSHA 10 for Construction

Upon completing the course, participants receive a physical OSHA 10 card, which serves as proof of their safety training.

Key takeaways from the OSHA 10 course include:

  • Recognizing workplace hazards
  • Preventing accidents
  • Understanding worker rights and employer responsibilities
  • Knowing how to report unsafe conditions

Does an OSHA 10 Card Expire?

No, an OSHA 10 card does not expire according to federal OSHA guidelines. Once you pass the OSHA 10 course and receive your card, it remains valid for life. However, this does not mean that you won’t ever need to take a refresher course.

OSHA’s safety standards and practices evolve over time, and while the card itself doesn’t expire, employers, states, or unions may require you to renew your training. This is because staying up-to-date with the latest safety practices is important as new risks and regulations emerge.

When Should You Renew Your OSHA 10 Certification?

Even though the OSHA 10 card doesn’t expire federally, there are situations where workers may be required to renew or refresh their training:

1. Employer Policies

Many employers prefer to keep their workforce updated on the latest safety standards. As a result, they may ask workers to renew their OSHA 10 training every 3 to 5 years to ensure compliance with current safety regulations.

2. State Regulations

Some states have stricter safety rules than OSHA’s federal guidelines. These states may require workers to retake OSHA 10 training every few years. For example, Nevada and New York mandate regular safety training updates, particularly in construction.

3. Union Agreements

Certain unions require their members to renew their OSHA 10 certification periodically as part of labor agreements. Workers in construction or manufacturing unions might be expected to retake the training to maintain safety standards in the workplace.

OSHA 10 vs. OSHA 30: Key Differences

While both OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 courses aim to improve workplace safety, they serve different purposes and audiences.

Feature OSHA 10 OSHA 30
Course Length 10 hours 30 hours
Intended For Entry-level workers Supervisors, safety officers, experienced workers
Topics Covered Basic safety principles, hazard recognition Advanced safety management, in-depth hazard analysis, managing workplace incidents
Expiration No official expiration (may need renewal based on state/employer) No official expiration (similar renewal practices may apply)

Final Thoughts

Staying updated with workplace safety standards is always a good idea, even if your card doesn’t have an official expiration date.

If you have any doubts about your specific OSHA requirements, reach out to your company or refer to OSHA’s official guidelines to ensure you are on the right track. Ultimately, the goal of these courses is to keep you and your coworkers safe on the job.
