1. Ganesh Chaturthi: 7th September 2024, Saturday

Ganesh Chaturthi, or Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a special festival that celebrates the day when Lord Ganesha was born. People celebrate this festival to show respect to Lord Ganesha and ask for his blessings, hoping for a life without obstacles.

Ganesh Chaturthi begins by placing beautifully made clay statues of Lord Ganesha in homes and public spaces. People then perform a prayer ritual called aarti and give the deity different sweets and dishes. The celebrations last for ten days, ending with Ananta Chaturdashi, where the Ganesha statues are immersed in water, showing that the deity is going back to his home.

Ganesh Chaturthi usually happens in August or September, during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. People in India, especially in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with a lot of excitement. The festivities are not just limited to India; Indian communities worldwide join in to celebrate this occasion together.

Interesting Fact: The Bay Area Telugu Association (BATA), Maharashtra Mandal, and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) jointly celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi at the Fremont Hindu Temple in the USA’s Bay Area. After ten days of celebrations, they immerse the idol in the Pacific Ocean near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

2. Onam: 15th September 2024, Sunday

Onam is a festival in Kerala. People celebrate it because they believe in the story of a great king named Mahabali, who ruled in a time of happiness and prosperity. During Onam, they welcome King Mahabali back to Kerala to make sure everyone is happy and well. This festival also signals the end of the harvest season.

Onam happens in the Malayalam month of Chingam, usually around August or September. The festival lasts for ten days, with the main day, Thiru Onam, being the second day of celebrations. People in Kerala mainly celebrate Onam, but Malayali communities worldwide feel the festival’s happiness.

People celebrate by enjoying cultural events, watching traditional dances like Kathakali, and having big feasts called Onam Sadya. The celebrations also include making beautiful flower carpets called Pookalam and participating in exciting boat races known as Vallam Kali.

Interesting Fact:  The number of flowers in the pookalam (floral rangoli) rises each day. Earlier, only certain flowers were used, but sadly, this tradition is fading due to the extinction of those flower species.

3. Eid-e-Milad: 16th September 2024, Monday

Eid-A-Milad, also called Mawlid al-Nabi, is a festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide. The celebration of this festival among Muslims holds great importance as it marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, reminding them of his life, teachings, and exemplary character. Therefore, on this day, people think about these teachings, pray, and say thanks for the guidance the Prophet gave them.

Eid-A-Milad happens on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal. The celebration date changes each year in the regular calendar because it relies on the sighting of the moon. People all over the world who follow the Muslim faith celebrate Eid-A-Milad. Various places celebrate the festival differently, as local traditions and customs influence how people observe it.

People usually come together to pray, read stories about Prophet Muhammad’s life, and do good deeds to help others. They use decorative lights and have gatherings to make the celebration more festive.

Interesting Fact: Sunni Muslims observe this occasion on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal. On the other hand, the Shi’a community celebrates the festival of Mawlid on the 17th day of Rabi’ al-awwal.
