What is the Pomodoro Technique?

Francesco Cirillo invented the “Pomodoro Technique,” a time management strategy, in the late 1980s. It divides work into focused 25-minute periods, or “Pomodoros,” with brief pauses in between. The word “pomodoro” derives from the Italian word for “tomato,” as Cirillo kept track of his work intervals using a kitchen timer of a tomato shape.

 

 

After completing four Pomodoros, a longer break is taken to help maintain focus and prevent burnout. This method encourages sustained focus while preventing mental fatigue.

How Does the Pomodoro Technique Work?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to implement the Pomodoro Technique effectively:

  • Choose a Task: Select a task or project you need to work on. It can be something big or small, but it should be specific.
  • Set a Timer for 25 Minutes: Use a timer (a phone, app, or kitchen timer) and set it for 25 minutes. This is your first Pomodoro.
